Political pressure continues to mount on under fire Justice Minister Alan Shatter as a result of allegations that he failed to act on a file sent to him by a Garda whistleblower two years ago.
Mr Shatter stands accused of protecting a powerful institution, in this case An Garda Siochana and its occasionally fractious Commissioner Martin Callinan.

Aviva Health Insurance is to increase its health premium by almost 13% from March. The company has blamed the rise on factors such as the change in the cost of a public health bed.
The Government and the industry need to work together to find ways of
keeping young people in the market. Unless we have young and healthy
members to share the cost of the higher claims of older members,
premiums will continue to rise.

For much of last week Ireland was battered by hurricane type weather conditions as emergency services battled to maintain control and ensure safety. The Irish horse racing world has been left in a state of shock by the death of well known trainer Lucy Stack. Ms Stack aged 28took her own life. As one half of racing's 'golden couple' with her husband the trainer, Fozzy Stack, Lucy said in a letter read out at her funeral service that 'no call could have changed this. No chats over wine.'
The Winter Olympics got under way in Sochi, Russia amidst much controversy about the state of many hotels in the town. A posses of journaliststhere to cover the events complained that their accomdation was not fit for purpose due to the unfinished state of construuction work.
Ireland has five atheletes competing in the events.
